A Trusted Leader in Insurance for Over 70 Years
Jim Murphree Insurance, Inc., has an almost 60-year history of providing excellent insurance service to the people of Blount County and the surrounding areas. Founded in 1955 by Grady NeSmith and State National Bank, the agency spent its first five years building a reputation for quality and dependability in the Oneonta area. Bill Towns joined the team in 1960 and helped to make the group an area leader among independent agencies.
Nine years later, in 1964, Howard and Max Huie purchased the agency and formed Huie Insurance Agency, Inc. And in 1969, Stan Murphree purchased the agency and continued to operate under the Huie name. Stan began his career at Liberty National Insurance, working in both Birmingham and Oneonta. Under his leadership, the agency experienced tremendous growth. Stan made a name for himself as one of the top producers in the county and won numerous awards during his tenure.
In these early years, Stan earned the business of several customers who have remained with the agency for almost 50 years. A number of top-producers joined Stan during the 70s and 80s and the agency continued to grow and establish itself a leader in Blount County. Stan constructed a sandstone building at 407 2nd Avenue East to house the agency. Known for hosting the town’s first time and temperature sign, the building remains as the agency home and a community landmark.
After over 30 years of leadership, Stan sold the agency to his son, Jim, in 1993. Jim had worked as an agent since 1988 and was ready to establish himself in the community and the industry. Operating as Jim Murphree Insurance, Jim remained as president when Community Bank purchased the agency. The agency was transferred back to Jim, who serves as the owner and president today.
Jim and his team continue to enjoy success and serving the residents of the Blount County area. They are one of the largest and most established agencies in the region and are proud of their long-established reputation for excellence.
